JOY WALSH
Audiometrist / Hearing Therapist
Joy is a “Mainlander”, born in Dunedin and educated at Otago Girl’s High School. (She still has her uniform including hat). Having graduated from Otago University she taught Physical Education, Mathematics and Science in 3 Secondary Schools in Dunedin over the following 27 years. On moving to Christchurch she trained as a Hearing Therapist and worked for the Hearing association for the next 9 years. This role involved all aspects of rehabilitation of the hearing impaired including needs assessment, lip reading/speech reading, auditory training, communication skills, hearing loss counseling, hearing aid management, and assistive listening devices advice. Additionally Joy was an educational instructor to allied professionals, involved in writing NZQA unit standards, and undertook aural rehabilitation with adult Cochlear Implant recipients.
It was with these skills that Joy joined our team in Christchurch in 1989, trained as an audiometrist (qualifying through Australia) thus adding hearing aid fitting skills to her expertise. The year 2000 saw Joy move further North to Auckland and continued her work in this field for Associated Hearing, currently Hearing Technology.
Add all those years up and it will be no surprise then that she is a “Grandma”. She likes to swim, (so she can still fit into that school uniform) and has a friendly, cheerful and outgoing personality.
Joy loves to laugh and endeavors to adhere to the philosophy of “the client feels better about themselves on leaving than when they arrived”.
